Autumn’s secrets

Today’s wind and rain is stripping the leaves from the trees as we speak. We’ve gone from 74F at 8am this morning to 50F by 1pm this afternoon! It’s 47F now and the temps are still dropping. The lows are predicted to be in the 30sF…and maybe even hit the 20sF.

It may be safe to assume we may be heading into an early winter. But I must admit, Autumn was much prettier than I expected this year. With record-breaking drought and suffocating temps this summer, I wasn’t expecting much. Anything was a bonus.

I came across this quote last week and it really stopped me in my tracks. it was one of those “Aha! moments.” I’ve always loved Autumn, but maybe now I know why.

There is no season in all the year so beautiful, so radiant with glory, as the early autumn. There is no time when the human soul drinks in so fully the glory and beauty of nature. All objects of beauty are more beautiful while passing away from us. The closing up of a beautiful life—the fading of the holy stars in the dim light of morning—the ending of a quiet summer day and the passing away of the bright summer glory, are all more sweet and lovely as they are lost to us. The death-glow always beautifies anything that wears the trace of beauty ere it goes back to nothingness. We do not understand the secret of this principle, yet we know that it is some law of the infinite mind.

I know it sounds a bit morbid, but doesn’t the phrase, All objects of beauty are more beautiful while passing away from us, ring true? It seems like we don’t really begin to appreciate the beautiful things in life until they are moving out of reach and we realize there’s nothing we can do to hang on to them.

Relationships are like this as well, aren’t they? We mourn the death of someone we love. We’re sad when someone we care about moves away. Sometimes we regret when a friendship dies. That’s because we’re created for relationships…of all kinds. And they always seem more dear to us the closer we get to losing them. It’s a shame we sometimes don’t recognize and appreciate them earlier.

But in this finite life, we’ll always have to say good-bye to those we love. Sometimes much sooner than we’d like. Only in our faith are we comforted that we’ll one day see them again.
