The unoffical start of summer

True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic.
It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost,
but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.
~Arthur Ashe

Yesterday was Memorial Day for the United States. Typically a day of BBQs, pool parties and other get-togethers. It’s one of our coveted 3-day weekends and retailers entice us to part with our money with Memorial Day sales. It’s the unofficial beginning of summer. And the pools open. Yes, a good time had by all.

But we shouldn’t forget the reason for the season. Memorial Day was set aside shortly after the Civil War to commemorate those who died in battle. Originally called Decoration Day, the name was changed to Memorial Day in 1882. It gained more recognition after World War II, but wasn’t an official federal holiday until 1967. In 1971 the date was permanently set for the last Monday in May, making it a 3-day weekend.

It’s really a day to honor those who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Whether it’s the Civil War, World Wars I & II, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Iraq or Afghanistan, these men and women are our country’s true heroes. We also thank and honor all those who served and survived these wars.

And to take it one step further, I’d like to thank all the men and women who currently serve in the United States Armed Forces for the dedication and sacrifices they make every day on my behalf.

Hope everyone had a blessed and happy weekend.
